Catching the Hundred-pound Halibut: A Family’s Rebound from Stroke

Coming soon …

Beth’s upcoming memoir, tentatively entitled, Catching the Hundred-pound Halibut: A Family’s Rebound from Stroke begins when her adventurous husband, a scientist, suffers a rare type of brainstem stroke at their home in Juneau, Alaska when their son is nine. Slammed by the stroke, her husband is medevacked to a Seattle hospital where he must learn to walk, swallow, read, and ride a bike again.

The book reveals the couple’s struggles and triumphs through setbacks and victories in his recovery. Back in Alaska, her driven husband’s desire to explore the remote reaches of southeastern Alaska on their sailboat shakes Beth’s confidence as she and her young son cope with additional setbacks. The fear of losing him while at sea threatens to drive a wedge between the couple, yet the wilderness excursions inspire and promote his unconventional recovery. Her husband’s fight to regain his physical self and their post-stroke sailing experiences help Beth step away from her beloved home and inspiring work to strike out for a more fulfilling, challenging, and connected life with her family. Catching the Hundred-pound Halibut brings the reader in for a close experience as a family in crisis redefines itself.
